Indian Super League

The Indian Super League (ISL) (known as the Hero Indian Super League for sponsorship reasons is a professional football league in India. The league is one of the top-tier football leagues in India, the other being the I-League. The league features eight franchise teams from all around India. The ISL runs from September to December, with a finals series determining the champion.

The Indian Super League was founded in 2013 in an effort to make football a top sport in India and to make Indian football a major player worldwide. The league operates along the lines of the Twenty20 cricket Indian Premier League, and Major League Soccer of the United States.Unlike the majority of football leagues around the world, the ISL does not use the promotion and relegation system but instead a franchise system in which eight teams were created to participate in the league.

The inaugural season of the league started on 12 October 2014 and concluded on 20 December 2014.The current champions are Atlético de Kolkata, who won the 2014 season by beating the Kerala Blasters 1–0.

History
Origins

On 9 December 2010, the All India Football Federation signed a 15-year, 700-crore deal with Reliance Industries and the International Management Group of the United States. The deal gave IMG-Reliance exclusive commercial rights to sponsorship, advertising, broadcasting, merchandising, video, franchising, and rights to create a new football league. This deal came after the AIFF ended their 10-year deal with Zee Sports five years early in October 2010.

On 25 April 2011, the first version of an IPL-type football league was officially launched when the Indian Football Association of West Bengal launched the Bengal Premier League Soccer with the first season scheduled for 2012.[9] This league was not connected with the AIFF or IMG-Reliance. All six franchises would be based within West Bengal. The league would have featured top players such as Fabio Cannavaro, Robbie Fowler, Hernán Crespo, and Robert Pirès.[10] However, in February 2012, it was announced that the league would be postponed to an undecided date before finally disbanding officially in 2013 due to financial reasons.

In early 2012, the first rumours of an Indian Premier League-type football league, organized by IMG-Reliance, started arising after a conflict between the owners of the I-League clubs and the AIFF over lack of communication. The rumour was that IMG-Reliance had planned on reforming the I-League along the lines of the IPL and Major League Soccer in the United States.[12] These rumours were confirmed to be true in 2013 when, despite the failure of the Bengal Premier League Soccer, the AIFF approved IMG-Reliance's proposal for another IPL-style league for 2014, including all of India.

Early hits towards the proposed league followed soon after, with owners of the I-League clubs fully going against this idea.[14] The owners formed an organization known as the Indian Professional Football Clubs Association and stated that they would go against loaning out their players to IMG-Reliance for the league and go against signing any players already signed by IMG-Reliance.However, in August 2013, it was reported that IMG-Reliance had already signed the required amount of Indian players needed.

Foundations

The Indian Super League was officially launched on 21 October 2013 by IMG–Reliance, STAR Sports, and the AIFF. The league was announced to take place from January 2014 to March 2014. However, on 29 October 2013, it was announced that the ISL would be postponed to September 2014.Also in October, it was announced that former Manchester United player and France international Louis Saha had become the first marquee signing for the Indian Super League.

At first, it was announced that bidding for the eight Indian Super League teams would be complete before the end of 2013 and that there was already high-interest from big corporates, Indian Premier League teams, Bollywood stars, and other consortiums. However, due to the rescheduling of the league, the bidding was moved to 3 March 2014. It was also revealed around this time that not only would bidders need to comply with a financial requirement but they would also need to promote grassroots development plans for football within their area. Finally, in early April 2014, the winning bidders were announced. The selected cities/state in April 2014 were Bangalore, Delhi, Goa, Guwahati, Kochi, Kolkata, Mumbai, and Pune. Former India cricket player Sachin Tendulkar, along with PVP Ventures, won the bidding for the Kochi franchise. Another former Indian cricket player, Sourav Ganguly, along with a group of Indian businessmen and La Liga side Atlético Madrid, won the bid for the Kolkata franchise.[21] Meanwhile, Bollywood stars John Abraham, Ranbir Kapoor, and Salman Khan won the bid for the Guwahati, Mumbai, and Pune franchises respectively. Bangalore and Delhi were won by companies while Goa was won by a partnership between Videocon and I-League sides Dempo and Salgaocar.

The first team to be launched officially was the Kolkata franchise as Atlético de Kolkata on 7 May 2014. On 7 July 2014, the team announced the first head coach signing in Indian Super League with Antonio López Habas taking the reigns. The next day, Kolkata also announced the first official marquee signing in the Indian Super League when they signed UEFA Champions League winner Luis García.

Eventually, all eight teams were revealed as Atlético de Kolkata, Bangalore Titans, Delhi Dynamos, Goa, Kerala Blasters, Mumbai City, NorthEast United, and Pune City. However, on 21 August 2014, it was announced that due to Bangalore's owners dropping out, Chennai would be given a franchise instead. The team was eventually named Chennaiyin.[28] At the same time, the original marquee players were Luis García, Elano, Alessandro Del Piero, Robert Pirès, David James, Fredrik Ljungberg, Joan Capdevila, and David Trezeguet.

The inaugural season began on 12 October 2014 at the Salt Lake Stadium when Atlético de Kolkata defeated Mumbai City 3–0. The first goal was scored by Fikru Teferra. The inaugural final was held on 20 December 2014 with Atlético de Kolkata becoming champions after defeating Kerala Blasters 1–0 at the DY Patil Stadium.

Competition format

For the 2015 season, the Indian Super League will run from September to December.Teams play 14 matches against the other seven sides twice, home and away. In total, there are 56 games played during the regular season before the top 4 teams go into the finals. The finals include only a semi-final round and the final. The semi-final round is done in a two-legged format while the final is a one-off match played at a neutral venue.

Organization
Ownership

Just like the Indian Premier League, the Indian Super League has a similar ownership model in which the teams are owned by prominent businessmen, as well as celebrity owners from bollywood and cricket. The Indian Super League owners act as the league's "League Partners". British professional services group, Ernst & Young, were hired to draw up a criteria for the team bidding process and they were required to approve the bidders. In April 2014 the owners were announced. Bollywood stars such as Ranbir Kapoor, John Abraham, and Salman Khan were bid winners, as well as cricket stars such as Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly.Football clubs such as Atlético Madrid and Shillong Lajong were also bid winners.

Despite carefully selecting their owners, the Indian Super League has seen trouble in the past with their owners. In August 2014, two months before the first season, SUN Group, the owners of the Bangalore franchise, dropped out of the league after the league rejected their potential tie-up with I-League club Bengaluru FC. Later that month, it was announced that another Bollywood star, Abhishek Bachchan, would take over the last franchise spot and move the team from Bangalore to Chennai.

Squad formation and salaries

During the 2014 season, the average salary for a foreign player in the Indian Super League was approximately 36.5 lakh (~$60,000) while the average salary for an Indian player was approximately 24 lakh. The highest paid player that season was former Italian international Alessandro Del Piero, earning $1,700,000 for his three-month stint in India. The highest paid Indian players that season were Subrata Pal and Syed Rahim Nabi. Both players earned 80 lakh.

For the 2015 season, new roster rules were revealed by IMG–Reliance.

Stadiums

During the league's inaugural season, a variety of stadiums were used. Two of the stadiums, the DY Patil Stadium in Mumbai and the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Kochi, are mainly used as cricket stadiums. Three other stadiums are athletic stadiums which are primarily used to host football matches in the I-League: the Fatorda Stadium in Goa, the Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata, and the Balewadi Stadium in Pune. Three other venues were used which don't primarily host top-tier professional football: the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium in Assam, the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Chennai, and the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Delhi.

Sponsorship

On 18 July 2014, it was announced that Hero MotoCorp would be the first title sponsor of the Indian Super League. The deal is scheduled to last for three-years from 2014 to 2016.Then, on 30 September 2014, a week before the first season, it was announced that German sports manufacture, Puma SE, would be the official ball supplier of the Indian Super League. The company provides balls for matches and training sessions.

Along with Hero and Puma, on 9 October 2014, it was announced that the Indian Super League organizers had signed sponsorship deals with five companies. Maruti Suzuki was signed in as an associate sponsor, while PepsiCo and Amul also signed deals.

Media coverage
India

With STAR Sports being one of the organizers of the Indian Super League, they also serve as the official broadcasters of the league in India. The goal of STAR Sports for the league was to "use its superior content creation, packaging and presentation expertise to attract and retain viewer interest." In September 2014 it was announced that STAR Sports would broadcast the ISL through eight channels and five different languages in an attempt to reach 85% of the Indian television audience, the first of its kind in Indian sporting history.

The first match of the Indian Super League, between Atlético de Kolkata and Mumbai City on 12 October 2014, reportedly drew a television audience of 75 million people. The first week reportedly drew 170 million people in total. These numbers were 12 times more than what India drew for the 2014 FIFA World Cup and around 20-30 times more than what the I-League, India's other top-tier football league, drew on TEN Action and even the Premier League. Overall, at the end of the first season, it was reported that the ISL drew a total of 429 million viewers across India, just a bit lower than the Pro Kabaddi League, and two and a half times more than the FIFA World Cup. It was also reported that 57% of the viewers were women and children and that the STAR Sports website gained 32 million visits during the tournament.

International

The Indian Super League is also broadcast around the world. On 15 October 2014 it was announced officially where the league was being broadcast. In the United States and Australia, the league was shown by FOX Sports. In Europe and South-East Asia the league was shown by Eurosport and in the UK and some of Europe the league is shown by STAR Gold. In Africa the league was shown through SuperSport.

Criticisms

Due to the format of the Indian Super League, the league has taken plenty of criticism, especially leading into its first season. I-League club Churchill Brothers argued that the league would do more harm to football in India than good. Their main criticism was with the length of the league: "How do you even call it a league? You need at least six months to term yourself a league". Other critics have also questioned whether the league would actually improve the quality of Indian football and that the league might succeed in bringing spectators to the stadiums and increasing the amount of money the organizers have. The All India Football Federation director, Gautam Kar, has hit out at these criticisms, saying that the league will answer the critics in due time.

The league has also been criticized, or questioned, due to how long the season is. Unlike football leagues around the world, the Indian Super League season lasts from October to December, which is two-to-three months. In July 2015, India national team head coach, Stephen Constantine, had added to the disapproval of the league length and also called for there to be just one top league for football as currently the ISL shares the top spot with the I-League.

Adult Star Mia Khalifa Says no to Bigg Boss and to India

Yet another rumoured Bigg Boss 9 possible has denied being on the reality show leaving the number of confirmed contestants on the new season at exactly zero. The latest Bigg Boss no-show is adult actress Mia Khalifa who has not only rubbished the rumours but also said that she's never going set foot in India
It's a story that we've become more than slightly accustomed to reading over the last couple of weeks. Yet another rumoured Bigg Boss 9 possible has denied being on the reality show leaving the number of confirmed contestants on the new season at exactly zero. The latest Bigg Boss no-show is adult actress Mia Khalifa who has not only rubbished the rumours but also said that she's never going set foot in India.

This was Mia's rather strongly-worded tweet:

Last week, reports that the Lebanese-American star of X-rated films would do a Sunny Leone and appear in the new season of Bigg Boss caused a ripple of excitement. Now, 22-yeaar-old Mia can be crossed off the list as well, along with actress Shweta Basu Prasad, producer Uday Chopra, controversial godwoman Radhe Maa and comedian Gaurav Gera. (Also Read: Radhe Maa Not on Bigg Boss 9, Don't Believe the 'Atheists')

The only person who has so far admitted to having been approached by Bigg Boss producers is Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim, whose film MSG - 2: The Messenger releases this Friday. Ram Rahim said that he was in talks to feature in the show, should the makers agree to certain conditions. (Also Read: Ram Rahim Will Say Yes to Bigg Boss 9 on One Condition)

In an interview to news agency IANS, he said: "Yes, I've been approached to appear on the show. But I asked them if they allow me to exit the house for 2-3 hours every day to meet my followers then I can think for it. Still nothing is finalised."

Meanwhile, as the participant list shrinks daily, actor Salman Khan has already filmed the first promo for season 9. The Bajrangi Bhaijaan star is returning as host after reportedly having renegotiated his price.

Talvar: Reasons we are looking forward to the film

Talvar is not a voyeuristic film: Meghna Gulzar

According to an interview given to Indian Express when Meghna Gulzar was asked about the parallels being drawn out in the way media handled the Aarushi murder case and the very recent Sheena Bora murder, the Talvar director articulated, the obvious parallel is that theories come out before the investigations are over. She stated, it is not just the media which does this but also the investigating agencies which feed it. It is also the society — and that everyone sat at the dinner table and discussed these things, she purported. She elaborated her statement connecting her film Talvar with it saying that films on such subjects can be sensationalist in their execution and that Talvar is not a voyeuristic film. She further claimed that if there is anything she can vouch for, it is the integrity of the film.

Almost seven years after it happened, the files of the 2008 Aarushi Talwar murder case are all set to reopen and now it’s Bollywood’s turn to investigate the case. Talvar, a film on arguably India’s most controversial case is slated to release on October 2, 2015. The official trailer of this film directed by Meghna Gulzar is out and it is every bit riveting. The film is entirely based on the investigations carried out in the case and does not pass a judgment. However, as far as the trailer is concerned, the film goes beyond that 1300 sq. ft. apartment situated in Noida’s Jalvayu Vihar, where Aarushi and her family’s domestic help, Hemraj Banjade were killed. As Talvar’s trailer comes out, we list out some reasons why we are looking forward to the film…
- Amann Khuranaa

The unseen side of the story: While the double murder case received heavy media coverage and all aspects of it were covered, there is a side of it that the nation has not seen. With this film, as fact meets fiction, audience will get a chance to delve in the dark world of this horrific case. It was only with the help of a feature film that one could reach Aarushi’s bedroom. Only fiction gives you the liberty to see what went inside the police station and the courtrooms while the investigations were on. We know that a major portion of that will be fictionalized but those two hours will definitely be a nail-biting experience for a viewer who hasn’t seen anything beyond pictures of Aarushi and Hemraj, outside shots of the Talwars’ house, a handful of interviews given by the Talwar couple and some press conferences by the police and the administration. Vishal Bharadwaj has penned the story of the film.

Irrfan Khan: He might have been absent from the trailer launch of Talvar but Irrfan Khan is to be seen in his top form in the film. Playing an investigating officer, Irrfan Khan is a fine mix of swagger and subtlety. Be it his kickass dialogue delivery or stern facial expressions, Irrfan looks impeccable in every frame he appears in. After witnessing his light-hearted avatar in Piku, it would be interesting to see him in a serious role.

Tabu: Reportedly, Tabu has a significant role in Talvar but what is surprising is she is nowhere to be seen in the trailer of the film. Maybe, the makers want to keep her character under the wraps and surprise the audiences upon the release. Well, if that’s the case, we don’t really mind missing out on her in the trailer. She was crackling as a police officer in Drishyam. Now, we wait for the ace actress to stun us with Talvar.

Neeraj Kabi and Konkona Sen Sharma: As soon as you catch their first glimpse in the trailer, you wonder if there could be a better cast to play Rajesh and Nupur Talwar than Neeraj Kabi and Konkona Sen Sharma. The actors seem to have given superlative performances and their striking resemblance with the Talwar couple makes it all look so real. First rate costume designer Abhilasha Sharma also deserves a strong mention here whose work adds to the authenticity of the film.

Meghna Gulzar: If you go back in history, Meghna Gulzar has directed unsuccessful films like Filhaal..., Just Married and Dus Kahaniyaan and this film is being hailed as the comeback of the lady director after a long hiatus of eight years. True that Meghna’s films did not work at the box office but with each of her films; her urge of doing something different can be felt. The trailer of Talvar gives a glance of her gripping direction. Also, with Vishal Bharadwaj as the writer, Meghna would have definitely delivered something worth watching. And we are pretty impressed by the way the film has been named. The makers have referred to the sword (talvar) that the Lady Justice holds in her right hand while smartly indicating that it is a film about Talwars, the real life protagonists of the Aarushi Talwar murder case.

Hero live tweet review: First day first show

Ever since the first trailer of 'Hero' was released, everybody has been busy speculating the future of Sooraj Pancholi and Athiya Shetty in Bollywood. Amidst huge hype and expected buzz around the film, Bollywood debutantes have not expressed their gratitude towards producer Salman Khan for his unconditional support, but also shared their fears, ecstasy and expectations from the film.

For the uninitiated, ‘Hero’ is the remake of the superhit 1983 film of the same name. While filmmaker Subhash Ghai had made the original ‘Hero’, he has co-produced its modern day interpretation, which also features Jackie Shroff and Aditya Pancholi in key roles.

While the viewers have already got a glimpse of Bollywood newbies via the promos and songs of ‘Hero’, it is still to be seen if both Athiya and Sooraj really have what it takes to survive in the industry.

Will Hero prove to be a perfect launch for Athiya and Sooraj? Will the duo’s off-screen camaraderie been turned into crackling onscreen chemistry?

The iPhone 6S will cost you Rs. 1 lakh in the Indian grey market

Apple just announced some drool-worthy iPhones but unfortunately, they won't be launching in India on September 25, which is the day that they will go on sale in over a dozen other countries including the United States. If you must have the iPhone 6S or the iPhone 6S Plus -- and have deep pockets -- you will be able to pick one up from the Indian grey market for Rs. 1 lakh (or more).

A report in Economic Times, which includes quotes from grey market vendors in Mumbai's Heera Panna and Crawford markets, Delhi's Gaffar market, and Kolkata's Air-Conditioned and Fancy markets, says that the new iPhones would be available in the grey market within two days of their US launch. Some of them have even started taking pre-orders. They say that their agents in the US will place orders at Apple Stores in the US when the company starts pre-orders on September 16 and ship the phones to India within a couple of days of the Septemer 25 launch.

"The price will be around Rs. 1 lakh initially, but it will come down after the company announces the official launch date. We have started getting enquiries," a mobile store owner the Mumbai's Heera Panna market told ET. It turns out that the brand new Rose Gold model is the most popular and is expected to fetch around Rs. 10-15,000 more than the other variants.

This premium price window is likely to be narrow, however. Apple is expected to launch the new iPhones in India around the second week of October with prices starting from Rs. 65,000.

Would you pay these prices to get an iPhone 6S or the 6S Plus early?

US Senate Democrats block effort by Republicans to kill Iran nuclear deal

US president Barack Obama has achieved perhaps the greatest foreign policy victory of his six years in office, with a Republican-backed effort to kill the Iran nuclear agreement being narrowly blocked in the US Senate.

Forty Democrats and two independents voted to block a resolution disapproving of the pact in the 100-member chamber, one more than the minimum needed to keep it from advancing.

"This vote is a victory for diplomacy, for American national security, and for the safety and security of the world," Mr Obama said in a statement after a vote he termed "an historic step forward".

But Senate Republicans insisted the fight was not over.

Majority leader Mitch McConnell immediately took steps to clear the way for the chamber to consider the matter again, hoping some Democrats would vote differently next time.

"We'll revisit the issue next week and see if maybe any folks want to change their minds," he said in a speech angrily denouncing the vote.
Iran nuclear deal at a glance

The main points in the nuclear deal sealed by Iran and six world powers aimed at curbing Tehran's nuclear program in exchange for sanctions relief.

Under a law Mr Obama signed in May, Congress has until September 17 to pass a resolution disapproving of the international agreement.

If such a resolution were to pass, and survive Mr Obama's promised veto, it would bar the president from waiving many US sanctions on Tehran, a key component of the nuclear deal.

But there was no sign any votes would change, and Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid bluntly responded: "This matter is over with."

Senator Reid urged Senator McConnell to move on to other legislation, including bills providing long-term highway and transportation funding and urgent legislation to fund the government in the fiscal year beginning October 1 and avoid a government shutdown.

"This is a situation where he's [McConnell] lost the vote and it's a situation where he is just not in touch with reality as it exists," Senator Reid said.

The defeat came despite an intense $US40 million lobbying campaign against the agreement, largely by conservative pro-Israel groups.

Although the nuclear deal was reached after two years of negotiations with Iran by the US, Britain, France, Germany, Russia and China, the government of Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu vociferously opposed the agreement.

Mr Netanyahu said the deal demanded too little from Iran in exchange for sanctions relief and would strengthen a country he sees as a threat to Israel's existence.

Verdict in the 2006 Mumbai train blasts likely today: All you need to know about the case

A year after it concluded the trial in the 2006 serial blasts in Mumbai, a special court is said to be set to pronounce its verdict in the case. Here's everything you need to know about the case:

The blasts

Seven blasts in crowded Mumbai local trains took place on the evening of 7 July 2006 in which a total of 189 persons were killed. Over 820 people were injured in the blasts.

The blasts took place at Mahim and Matunga in central Mumbai and at Khar, Bandra, Jogeshwari, Mira Road and Borivali in the northern suburbs. All the blasts took place on the Western Railways line of the city's suburban rail network.

The blasts were allegedly engineered using a mixture of RDX and ammonium nitrate. The explosive mixture was allegedly packed into seven bags which were then placed in trains leaving from Churchgate in south Mumbai for the suburbs. The bombs were planted in the first class coaches of the trains.

The accused and the alleged plot

The Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad had arrested 13 persons for their alleged involvement in the case. The police has said that the accused were linked with terror group Lashkar-e-Taiba and banned group Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI).

They are: Faisal Shaikh, Ali Bashir Khan, Mohammad Ali, Majid Shafi, Sajid Ansari, Kamal Ansari, Ethesham Siddiqui, Zameer Shaikh, Sohail Shaikh, Muzammil Shaikh, Tanvir Ansari, Naved Hussain and Abdul Shaikh. One of the accused, said to be a Pakistani, allegedly died in the blasts.

The police has said that the bombs were assembled at Mohammed Ali's house by the accused, along with Pakistani nationals.

Former Mumbai police commissioner AN Roy, at the time of filing of the chargesheet, had said that there were allegedly 14 people involved in the planting of the bombs.

“They were divided into seven teams, each consisting of a Pakistani national and an Indian national. We have arrested five out of the seven Indian nationals. One out of the seven Pakistanis died at the blast site, while we have asked for the other six who are reportedly hiding in Pakistan to be externed," Roy was quoted as saying in a Mumbai Mirror report.

All 13 have been charged under sections of the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA), Indian Penal Code, Unlawful Activities Prevention Act, Explosives Act, Railway Act, Passport Act and Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act. They face a maximum punishment of the death penalty.

The 13 accused have been in prison for seven years already as the trial against them has proceeded.

The police has also named 15 others in the chargesheet in which Lashkar-e-Taiba's Pakistan-based leader Azeem Cheema has been named as the prime conspirator.

Trial so far

The verdict is set to come a year after special judge YD Shinde concluded the trial. At the time he had declared that the judgement could be announced on 19 September, 2014.

The prosecuting agency, state Anti Terrorism Squad (ATS), had examined 200 witnesses in the case against 13 accused, while the defence lawyers examined a total of 40 witnesses.

The ATS has filed a chargesheet that runs into over 10,000 pages.

Special public prosecutor Raja Thakare, who appeared for the ATS in this case, said the court must be ensuring that all the evidence and arguments of both the prosecution and defence is covered in the judgment and there are no loose ends.

"During the trial, we (prosecution and defence lawyers) submit a lot of evidence and judgments in support of our arguments. All that has to be perused and considered by the judge before passing judgment. It is a huge task," Thakare told PTI.

The controversies

The pressure cooker factor: The first controversy in the trial came thanks to a statement made well the chargesheet was filed. When announcing the arrests in the case in 2006, former police commissioner AN Roy had said that the bombs used in the blasts were packed into pressure cookers which were then planted on the trains.

However, the pressure cooker theory was later found missing in the chargesheet in the case. The police justified its absence saying that they had mentioned "household items" in the chargesheet. But at the end of the trial, the special public prosecutor told the court that pressure cookers "could have been used". This, despite the fact, that none of shopkeepers from where the cookers were allegedly bought were examined by the prosecution during the trial.

Torture: The accused in the case have accused the police of torture in order to extract confessions. Confessions are admissible as evidence under Mcoca. Two of the accused filed an application before the court accusing the police of torture. Media outlet Gulail had released interviews with some of the accused using hidden cameras in which the Mumbai Police was accused of torture. Here's the video:

The police has argued that the claim of torture is part of the Al-Qaeda manual on terrorism and the accused are merely following it.

The Indian Mujahideen factor: In 2008 the Mumbai police claimed to have confessions from three members of terror group Indian Mujahideen, who said they had carried out the blasts. Sadiq Shaikh, Arif Shaikh and Mohammed Saif claimed that the explosives had been procured by Indian Mujahideen chief Riyaz Bhatkal. The bombs were allegedly assembled at a house in Sewri before they were placed on trains.

Bhatkal, who was later arrested, claimed that the blasts were carried out by the group to avenge the 2002 Gujarat riots. Bhatkal allegedly claimed that explosives were brought in from Karachi, which was smuggled into India. It was then allegedly taken to Azamgarh and transported to Mumbai by two persons where the bombs were assembled.  The ATS, however, stuck to its stand on the 13 accused and has not included the alleged Indian Mujahideen as accused in the case.

The call data records: The accused have claimed call data records for many of them punch holes in the police theory about the blasts. The defence has shown call data records to indicate that four of the accused were nowhere near where the police has claimed they were.

Controversies

Hit-and-run case

On 28 September 2002, Khan was arrested for rash and negligent driving after his car ran into a bakery in Mumbai; one person who was sleeping on the pavement outside the bakery died and three others were injured in the mishap.Charges of culpable homicide were laid against him, but later dropped. On 24 July 2013, he was formally charged with culpable homicide in the case, to which he pleaded not guilty.

On 6 May 2015, Khan was found guilty of all charges in the case. The Bombay Sessions Court concluded that Salman Khan was driving the car under the influence of alcohol causing the death of one and serious injury to four homeless persons. Sessions judge DW Deshpande convicted the actor for culpable homicide not amounting to murder and sentenced him to five years in prison. Later on same day, Bombay High Court granted him interim bail till 8 May 2015, on which the court suspended his prison sentence until the final appeal hearing in July. His driver Ashok Singh, who had given the testimony that it was him who was driving the car at the time of accident, was charged with perjury for misguiding the Court with false testimony and was arrested. The kidnapping and eventual death of prime witness Police Constable Ravindra Patil remains a mystery, with some suspecting the involvement of organized crime.

Relationship with Aishwarya Rai

His relationship with actress Aishwarya Rai was a well publicized topic in the Indian media. After their break-up in March 2002, Rai accused him of harassing her. She claimed that Khan had not been able to come to terms with their break-up and was hounding her; her parents lodged a complaint against him. In 2005, news outlets released what was said to be an illicit copy of a mobile phone call recorded in 2001 by the Mumbai police. It appeared to be a call in which he threatened Rai, in an effort to force her to appear at social events held by Mumbai crime figures. The call featured boasts of connections to organised crime and derogatory comments about other actors. However, the alleged tape was tested in the government's Forensic lab in Chandigarh, which concluded that it was fake.

Blackbuck hunting case

On 17 February 2006, Khan was sentenced to one year in prison for hunting the Chinkara, an endangered species. The sentence was stayed by a higher court during appeal. On 24 July 2012, Rajasthan High Court finalized charges against Salman Khan and his other colleagues in the endangered blackbuck killing case, paving way for start of the trial. On 9 July 2014, Supreme Court issued a notice to Salman on Rajasthan government's plea challenging the HC order suspending his conviction.

Remarks about 26/11 attacks

On September 2010, Khan was reported to have claimed during an interview to a Pakistani channel that the 26/11 attacks got a lot of attention because the "elite" were targeted.During the interview the actor had said – "It was the elite that was targeted this time. Five star hotels and stuff. So they panicked. Then they got up and spoke about it. My question is why not before. Attacks have happened in trains and small towns too, but no one talked about it so much."Khan also said that Pakistan was not to be blamed for it, and that the Indian security forces had failed. Khan's comments had drawn strong reactions from Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra Chagan Bhujbal, Shiv Sena, BJP and other political parties. The comments were also condemned by Ujwal Nikam, Special Prosecutor in the 26/11 trial.Khan later apologized for his comments.

While Anil is excited about Sonam's upcoming film, he is reluctant to talk about his son Harshvardhan Kapoor, who will make his film debut with the Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra-directed Mirziya.

"I don't want to say anything about my son, it is too early. I am not going to say anything, when the time is right, we will talk. Let his work speak," he said. Anil Kapoor is also excited about the sequel to his film No Entry and his television show 24. Besides this, he has a couple of films under the banner of his home production.

"We are producing Battle for Bittora and there is another film which we can't talk about as we are working on the script. As of now we are focusing on 24. Saat Hindustani has been put on hold," Mr Kapoor said.

On reports that Pakistani actor Fawad Khan had been replaced by Farhan Akhtar in Battle for Bittora, he said, "Just wait and watch."

Meanwhile, Anil Kapoor is happy with the success of his latest release Welcome Back.

"I am really happy with the response we are getting for the film. It is a huge franchise and people have showed their love towards the film and our characters," he said.

The list of movie-goers who were left in tears after watching Salman Khan's Bajrangi Bhaijaan is getting longer. Actor Sooraj Pancholi has confessed to having cried in the film despite not being the 'emotional type.'

Sooraj, who makes his debut in this week's Hero, was outed by his co-star Athiya Shetty and admitted, "Bajrangi Bhaijaan got me. I had a lot of tears." He also said it was his favourite film and that he's hoping director Kabir Khan will cast him in a film.

Sooraj, who is being mentored by the Bhaijaan himself, is the latest addition to a growing community made weepy by the film.

Aamir Khan, famously lachrymose, appeared to have sobbed through the movie when he watched it at an Eid screening. So much, that when he exited the cinema, a towel had to be pressed into service to dry his face, which was wet with tears. (Also Read: Aamir Khan Cried and Cried in Katti Batti. US Open 2015 doubles delight for India: Sania Mirza, Leander Paes in finals

In a double delight for Indian fans, veteran tennis star Leander Paes and Sania Mirza stormed into the finals of the US Open mixed doubles and women’s doubles draw respectively with common partner Martina Hingis.

Fourth seeds Paes and Hingis were in top form as they staved off a tough challenge from the second-seeded pair of Rohan Bopanna and Yung-Jan Chan of Chinese Taipei 6-2, 7-5.

Both the teams served four aces each but the Bopanna-Chan combine suffered on the unforced errors count, which was 12 as compared to 9 from Paes and Hingis.

The Indo-Swiss pair will now face the US duo of Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Sam Querrey.

Earlier Hingis combined superbly with Sania as the duo made it look relatively simple against the Italian pair of Sara Errani and Flavia Pennetta 6-4, 6-1.

The top-seeded pair will take on the winner of the second semi-final match between Casey Dellacqua (Australia) Yaroslava Shvedova (Kazakhstan) and Anna-Lena Groenefeld (Germany)-Coco Vandeweghe (USA).

Both the Indian players saw success on Court 17 as a host of nation’s tennis fans turned up to back their stars in action.

Paes thanked all the fans, who came in numbers to support the stars.

“I thank all the Indians who came here to support me and Martina and also Sania and Martina in the other game,” Paes said.

There was disappointment though in the Junior Girls Singles category as Karman Kaur Thandi’s winning run ended against Dalma Galfi in the third round. The 17-year-old Indian went down against the second-seeded German 6-4, 7-6.

'Hawalabaaz' Cong didn't let Parliament function: PM Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday launched a scathing attack on Congress for not letting Parliament function and scuttling crucial bills like the GST, saying the 'hawalabaaz' (corrupt) are acting only as roadblocks.

PM Modi said it was the only party that did not agree to let Parliament function and decisions be taken.

"We had hoped the Congress would work with us and help Parliament enforce reforms but it is the only one that does not agree. I appeal to those who have been rejected by the people to work with us for the pride of democracy and fend off economic dangers," said PM Modi while addressing BJP workers in the capital of Madhya Pradesh.

The PM said India wants to move ahead and is standing firm despite global economic scenario and this opportunity should be taken advantage of and parties should allow Parliament to function.

While countering a barb by Congress chief Sonia Gandhi - who had said on Tuesday his poll promises were "nothing more than hawabaazi (empty talk)" - he said, "The 'hawalabaaz' are worried that the ground beneath their feet is slipping. They can sense the impending danger."

The PM said Congress is yet to digest poll verdict but the BJP has always tried to learn from its mistakes.

"We didn't criticise others but introspected and corrected our mistakes instead and today the people of the nation have given a government with full majority."

Djokovic reaches US Open semis for 9th straight year, will play Cilic next

New York: Novak Djokovic's U.S. Open quarterfinal was suddenly tied at a set apiece, and he tore off his shirt as he headed to the sideline. He sat, halfheartedly tried to smash his racket, then began screaming.

Hardly the first time, nor likely to be the last, that Djokovic has let out a little emotion during a match. Whatever gets you through the day, right?

Gathering himself after getting pushed around a bit by an opponent with an unconventional style, Djokovic wound up reaching the semifinals at Flushing Meadows for the ninth consecutive year with a 6-1, 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (2) victory over 18th-seeded Feliciano Lopez that finished a little after 1 a.m. Wednesday.

"It was frustrating at times," the No. 1-ranked Djokovic said, "but this is the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam. This is what you expect."

For all of his success getting to the closing days of the U.S. Open, though, Djokovic has one championship to show for it, in 2011. His other eight major titles came at either the Australian Open or Wimbledon.

Still, Djokovic is certainly consistent: He has now made it to the semifinals at 22 of the past 23 major tournaments.

"I hope I can keep on going," the Serb said.

On Friday, he will take on defending champion Marin Cilic, who was unfazed by wasting a big lead or match points while holding on to beat 19th-seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France 6-4, 6-4, 3-6, 6-7 (3), 6-4 earlier Tuesday.

"A big mental fight," the Croatian called it, "especially after losing that fourth set."

Djokovic has never lost to Cilic, winning all 13 of their matches.

The two men's quarterfinals on the other half of the men's draw are Wednesday: No. 2 Roger Federer vs. No. 12 Richard Gasquet of France, and No. 5 Stan Wawrinka vs. No. 15 Kevin Anderson of South Africa.

Lopez's loss dropped him to 0-4 in Grand Slam quarterfinals; this was his first time that far in New York.

He is a 33-year-old lefty who is that rare player these days who likes to use serve-and-volley tactics, doing so 41 times against Djokovic, winning the point 28 times. Djokovic, a brilliant baseliner, tried serve-and-volleying twice.

"There were a few moments in which I had the No. 1 player in the world in a tough spot," Lopez said.

His only break of the match came in the second set, and he made it count. Serving out that set, he saved a break point, then ended the game with an ace and pounded his chest. That's when Djokovic was soon in his chair, bare-chested and bellowing.

Yet 40 minutes later, Djokovic was back in control, serving out the second set at love and capping it with a forehand winner.

Cilic appeared to be heading to a relatively straightforward win after taking the first two sets, considering he was 47-0 in his Grand Slam career when up by that margin. But Tsonga took the third set by finally converting his seventh break point of the match, and then serving it out from 15-30 by taking the last three points with a pair of service winners at 131 mph and 132 mph, followed by a 124 mph ace.

Tsonga, the 2008 Australian-Open runner-up, then saved three match points in the fourth set to force a fifth.

"Jo just came up with amazing shots," Cilic said.

In the last set, Cilic broke at love to lead 3-2, and didn't falter this time, although he did need another two match points to close it out, double-faulting on one, before finally winning when Tsonga sailed a forehand long.

"It's a lot of frustration, of course, but that's tennis," Tsonga said.

Tsonga entered his quarterfinal against Cilic having held in all 56 of his service games in the tournament, a streak that reached 60 before Cilic broke to go up 5-4 in the first set. Cilic broke early in the second, too, and wound up winning three of Tsonga's service games.

Tsonga helped out by double-faulting 11 times.

"I just served, I would say, very bad compared to the other days," Tsonga said.

Cilic, meanwhile, hit 29 aces and saved nine of 10 break points.

Cilic wore a thick brace on his right ankle, which he tweaked during his fourth-round victory over another Frenchman, Jeremy Chardy. But it was Tsonga who appeared more troubled by an ailment, wearing a thick band of tape under his left knee.

"I don't really want to talk about this, you know," Tsonga said. "It's part of the game, unfortunately, for me."
