Is Bengaluru-based techie MG Gokul, who allegedly plotted his wife’s death and took international airlines for a royal ride by sending bomb threat messages to the Kempe Gowda International Airport (KIAL), a split personality? The police, who grilled him in separate sessions over the last three days, are not only horrified to learn about his crazy plans, but have also found that he has come up with some "wild stories."
“His statements appear to be contradictory. He comes up with some wild stories unconnected with whatever has happened with him so far. It is as if he is trying to justify himself even as he is contradicting his statements. However, he is sticking to his original story of eliminating his wife to get close to his true love (his engineering course classmate),” said a senior police officer, who engaged Gokul for several hours.
While police officers did admit that people who are subjected to intensive interrogation often show such signs of split personality owing to pressure, they do not want to take any chances in the case of Gokul. It is common for people to crack under pressure and display unforeseen and erratic behavior. Now, the police want a counselor to talk to Gokul so that he becomes consistent in his statements. On Tuesday, the police presented Gokul before a local court, which remanded him to judicial custody till September 30.
Several other angles of the case also need to be probed by the police before they arrive at any kind of conclusion. For instance, Gokul managed to get hold of the identification documents of Saju Jose to purchase a mobile phone SIM (the number, which he used to send the threat messages to the KIAL). While a section of the police believes that Saju Jose’s wife could be hand in glove with Gokul, it is yet to be established with any conclusive evidence.
“She appeared normal when our interrogation officers and a counselor spoke to her. She told them that Gokul frequented her home and even knew Saju Jose well. We believe that Gokul might have laid hands on the identification documents of Saju from his room because of the liberty he enjoyed at their home,” another police officer pointed out. Gokul, so far, has not given any convincing answer on how he procured Saju Jose’s identification documents to purchase the mobile phone SIM card.
A statement made by Saju’s wife has further confused the police. Apparently, she told the counselor that she was willing to take care of Gokul’s daughter. Gokul is now behind the bars and his wife is no more. The baby girl is now under the care of her maternal grandfather.
“The baby is suffering because of what Gokul did knowingly. Somehow, I feel that I am the sole cause for the fate of the child today. It is now my responsibility to take care of the child,” Saju’s wife reportedly told the police. However, the police have left it to the discretion of the child’s grandfather to take a final call on the matter.
It is believed that the combined loss incurred by the KIAL and the domestic airlines and the international airlines because of the bomb threat messages is more than Rs 6 crore. There is no way that the losses can be recovered from Gokul. But this will make the case tighter against Gokul. The police said that for the crime that he has committed, he could attract a life term depending on the chargesheet they file. International airlines can be sued by passengers, particularly those taking connecting flights, in cases of delay like this.
